I was driving on the interstate today and I saw a Sequoia. That got me thinking, I think Toyota is the only brand that has two, distinctively different full size SUVs. The Sequoia:
And the LandCruiser:
They are totally different platforms (with the LC being it’s own, and the Sequoia based on the Tundra) but they do share the same engine.
I guess it even extends past full size SUVs with Toyota even. Since they have the 4Runner and Highlander which are both “Midsize” but totally different platforms (Highlander based on Camry, 4Runner based on LandCruiser Prado). Is there any other brand with as much segment overlap, with totally different platforms?

Ford Expedition and Excursion.
GM full-size unibody Acadia/Traverse, and truck-based Suburban, Yukon, and Escalade.

The Excursion has been dead for a long time, though. I think you could say Ford once the new Explorer comes out.

To be fair, neither of those are the same size. The Excursion is a HD chassis only, solid axles front and rear. The Expedition has 4-wheel independent, and has for a while.
And the Traverse at one point was closer to the size of the Tahoe, but it’s still smaller.

I guess Chev must have some overlap with the Traxx, Blazer, Equinox, Traverse, Tahoe, and Suburban.

What about Mercedes?

Land Cruiser is smaller than Sequoia, but both may classify as EPA full-size.
I didn’t think they meant literally identical dimensions.

Bingo. Beat me to it.
![]() 02/09/2019 at 22:51 |

Yea, i’m thinking current vehicles. I thought about Ford, and the Expedition/Excursion would definitely fit . Also Buick and Chevy both say the Enclave/traverse is Midsize, so no comparison there to the Tahoe type offerings.
![]() 02/09/2019 at 22:54 |

Blazer is Midsize, Enclave is midsize, Equinox is small, Trax is compact. So the Blazer and Traverse are both “midsize” offerings, but they do ride on the same platform.

That’s a great example. Definitely different there.

Makes me think are the highlander and 4runner similar size?
![]() 02/09/2019 at 22:56 |

Yes. Highlander is actually longer than the 4Runner, same width, but shorter by a few inches.
![]() 02/09/2019 at 23:00 |

No... the GLS is unibody.
![]() 02/09/2019 at 23:07 |

Is the Blazer a 3 row? The only reason people buy Travers is because “SUVs are cooler than Minivans”
![]() 02/09/2019 at 23:10 |

Excursion was waaay bigger than the Expedition. The current Expedition is probably about he same size as an Excursion was. But with that said the Excursion was in a full 3/4 chassis identical to an F-250 while the Excursion was still on the F-150 chassis, but this was back when the Explorer was on the Ranger Chassis.
Model bloat is real people.

I think we’re only comparing size here. Not purpose or construction

Bigly and Biglier
![]() 02/09/2019 at 23:28 |

Oh, ok. It’s just that when people talk about full size SUVs they normally refer to body on frame vehicles.
Still, the GLS is based on the GLE, and the G wagon is really small
so it’s kinda cheating....
![]() 02/09/2019 at 23:30 |
|
That’s a good point the G wagon is kinda like an XJ it’s easy to think of them as bigger than they are
![]() 02/09/2019 at 23:47 |

I saw one of the new ones a few days ago in a dealer, it's bigger, but really, strictly a five seater. The old one is very uncomfortable though.

The 4Runner is the real Land Cruiser and the Land Cruiser is the Toyota Range Rover. If we could buy the stripper Cruiser I might change my mind.

That Traverse seems huge to me in the parking garage I go to.
![]() 02/10/2019 at 00:04 |

The Tahoe is 204.0 inches long. The Traverse is 204.3 inches long.
![]() 02/10/2019 at 00:05 |

The Traverse is 0.3 inches longer than the Tahoe .

Toyota has always had a crazy full SUV lineup. I always thought it was strange but its sure paid off for them lately.
![]() 02/10/2019 at 00:18 |

Its kinda true...and its exactly why we wont get a stripper Land Cruiser.
Why should they offer a 60 grand Land Cruiser when you can buy a 38 grand 4runner?
![]() 02/10/2019 at 00:26 |

The Tahoe and Suburban are both full-size. And the Traverse is also full-size.
![]() 02/10/2019 at 01:07 |

Suburban, Yukon and Escalade are the same exact platforms . Just different “brands”. LC and Seq are the same brand, different platforms.
![]() 02/10/2019 at 01:09 |

Id just like to point out that Toyota actually has three unique full size 4x4 platforms...you forgot the 75 Series (cab chassis, dual cab chassis, 2 door Troop carrier and four door wagon).
And Land Rover has the Range Rover and D5 on different platforms ATM and the forthcoming Defender will be a different platform again.
![]() 02/10/2019 at 01:10 |

They’re a lot bigger than an old Cherokee...
(I say Cherokee instead of XJ because that what's makes me think Jaguar, because Jag XJ>dumb jeep thing)

I’m going to have to argue that point. Body on frame does not have to be a requirement of an SUV any more than flight is a requirement for a bird. Construction styles change with time. If you’re going to require SUV’s to be body on frame, why not Corvettes too? Or require Lambos to come with a pound of Coke in the glove box?
GLS has a longitudinal drivetrain with proper transfer case and differentials. It’s available with a two speed transfer case and steel skid plates.
![]() 02/10/2019 at 01:21 |

Body o
n frame is
what my mind goes to directly,
but I agree that construction styles change over time.
![]() 02/10/2019 at 03:45 |

Wrong. The GLS is the only full size SUV MB sells. The G sits somewhere between the GLC and GLE in terms of size.
![]() 02/10/2019 at 03:48 |

BOF =/= Full Size
![]() 02/10/2019 at 05:00 |

The Tahoe, the suburban, the traverse, that's 3 all of which have 3rd row seating
![]() 02/10/2019 at 08:25 |
|
Huh. The Tahoe is still larger in all of the other exterior metrics at least.
![]() 02/10/2019 at 08:33 |

I know they aren’t the same size , I just think of both of them as bigger than their a size. I think of them as large, and gargantuan when in reality the old Cherokee is tiny it’s subcompact by today’s standard , and the last G Wagon was medium like maybe as big as a Ford Edge.

Import an ex UN model. Done. Although n/a diesel might go nowhere slowly.
![]() 02/10/2019 at 11:22 |

Ford has the Flex, Explorer and Expedition.

Oh I see their logic but everything was shifted up after we had the FJ60. Th ere was the first g en 4Runner about that time too I guess but that was more like a pickup with a removable top and rear seat. I t’s too bad we don’t get the stuff thr Aussies get thr FJ70 style as a crew pickup or something but it wouldnt meet safety I guess. Oz must have different rules to keep those on sale. The outback needs that shit too, the little utes hang in there but where I was travelling they were pretty beat up.

Traverse is not full size. Tahoe/Suburban are same platform.
![]() 02/10/2019 at 15:34 |

Tahoe and Suburban are same exact platform. Traverse is midsize according to Chevy’s own website
![]() 02/10/2019 at 15:34 |

I’m just going off of what Chevy actually says it is.
![]() 02/10/2019 at 15:37 |

I’m thinking the US models specifically since we don’t get the 75 series platform over here. But yes, they have better 4x4 offerings not in the US since you also have the Hilux
![]() 02/10/2019 at 15:38 |

I totally forgot the Flex is classified as a full size. I guess i forget since it’s a wagon vs an “SUV”
![]() 02/10/2019 at 17:51 |

All SUVs are arguably wagons.
![]() 02/10/2019 at 18:09 |

I know that, and I said that.
Traverse and Suburban are the same brand, both full- size 3-row vehicles , on different platforms.
Accadia and Yukon are the same brand, likewise.
And there is still enough market demand left over for Escalade, and smaller CUVS across the board, from GM alone... let alone other brands.
